A rainbow looks like a painting someone hung across the sky after a storm. But nobody painted it. It's actually a magic trick performed by sunlight and a sky full of leftover raindrops — and once you know how the trick works, it gets even more beautiful.

Here's the first secret: sunlight only LOOKS white. It's really a bundle of every color, all stacked together and traveling as one. Your eyes can't tell them apart — until something splits the bundle open.

That something is a raindrop. After rain, the air is still full of tiny round drops drifting and falling. Each one is a clear little ball of water — and a clear ball of water can do something wonderful to light.

When sunlight enters a raindrop, it slows down and bends — like a runner stepping from a track onto soft sand. And here's the trick: each color bends by a slightly different amount. So the colors that were stacked together begin to spread apart.

Inside the drop, the spread-out colors hit the far wall and bounce back, like a ball off the inside of a bowl. Then they bend again on the way out — spreading even wider. One drop, in, bounce, out, and a tiny fan of color comes flying back toward you.

Each raindrop only sends one thin sliver of color to your eye. Red comes from drops sitting higher in the sky; violet from drops lower down. It takes millions of drops, each chipping in its one color, to build the whole arch you see.

That's why a rainbow is always round — a piece of a giant circle. And why it always sits opposite the sun. The light has to bounce back toward you, so the sun must be behind you and the rain in front. Turn to face the rainbow, and the sun is warming your back.

Sometimes a fainter second rainbow hangs above the first, with its colors flipped upside down. That one comes from light that bounced TWICE inside the drops before escaping — an echo of the first trick, a little dimmer and reversed.

So a rainbow isn't really a thing hanging in the sky. It's a direction — the exact place where sunlight, raindrops, and your own two eyes line up just right. Step sideways and it shifts with you. Nobody else sees quite the same rainbow you do. It was made, in part, for you.

And that's the whole trick. White light, a million round drops, a bend, a bounce, and a bend again. No paint, no magic wand — just sunshine being honest about all the colors it was carrying the whole time.
