How is a food web different from a food chain?
Picture a meadow at breakfast time. Everybody is eating somebody. The question is just: who's eating whom, and how do we draw the map of all that munching? Two famous maps try to answer that — and one of them is way messier (in a good way).
Start simple. A food chain is a single straight line of who-eats-who. Grass grows. A grasshopper eats the grass. A frog eats the grasshopper. A snake eats the frog. A hawk eats the snake. One arrow to the next, like a row of dominoes. Easy to read, easy to remember.
