No single person in charge — just math and agreement.

So what's actually different about digital money? Speed, for one — it moves at light speed instead of armored-truck speed. Convenience — your money lives everywhere your phone does. But also: it's more abstract, easier to create, and dependent on everyone agreeing that the numbers on the screens are as real as the paper in your hand. Which, when you think about it, paper money requires that same agreement. We've just been trusting it longer.
