What is soil made of?
You walk on it every day. You dig in it, plant in it, maybe even get it on your shoes. But what exactly IS soil? If you scooped up a handful and looked really close — like detective-level close — what would you find?
First surprise: soil isn't one thing. It's a mix — like trail mix, but earthier. The biggest ingredient? Tiny bits of ROCK. Over thousands of years, wind and rain and ice crack big rocks into smaller rocks, then into pebbles, then into grains so small you'd need a magnifying glass to see them. That's the sandy, gritty part you feel.
