What was the civil rights movement, and what did it change?
Imagine a country with a set of unfair rules — rules that said where you could sit, drink, or go to school, all based on the color of your skin. In the United States, especially in the South, those rules were real, and they were called segregation. The civil rights movement was the long, brave effort by millions of people to tear those rules down.
For a long time, Black Americans were forced to use separate things from white Americans. Separate schools, separate water fountains, separate seats on the bus. The people in charge claimed it was "separate but equal." But it was never equal — the Black schools got the old books, the worn buildings, the leftovers. Separate was just a polite word for unfair.
