Where does our drinking water come from?
You turn on the tap and water rushes out — cold, clean, ready to drink. Where does it come from? Not the pipe, obviously. Before that. Way, way before that. The answer is a journey that starts with the sky, dips underground, and involves more clever engineering than you might expect.
Most drinking water starts as rain. Clouds release it, and it falls onto forests, fields, rivers, and lakes. Some of it soaks into the ground and filters down through layers of soil and rock — a process that can take years. It settles in underground pools called aquifers, huge natural reservoirs trapped between stone.
