You've probably noticed: Golden Retrievers carry tennis balls, slippers, even baby ducks in their mouths without leaving a single tooth mark. How do they do that? The answer lives partly in their jaws — and partly in their hearts.
Start with the job they were bred for, 150 years ago in Scotland. Hunters needed a dog that could swim into cold lakes, find a shot duck, and bring it back without crushing it. The duck had to still be good to eat. That meant: soft mouth, always.
