Water is everywhere around you right now — in rivers, oceans, puddles, even your dog's water bowl. When the sun heats that water, something sneaky happens: the liquid turns into vapor, an invisible gas that floats up into the air. You can't see it leave, but it's escaping all the time, molecule by molecule.

That vapor rides the wind up and up. The higher it goes, the colder the air gets — like climbing a mountain in summer and suddenly needing a jacket. When vapor gets cold enough, it clings to tiny specks of dust or salt floating in the sky. Each water molecule grabs onto a speck and forms a microscopic droplet.

Eventually a droplet gets so heavy that the air can't hold it up anymore. Gravity wins. The droplet falls — and when millions of droplets fall at once, you get rain. That's it. The cloud didn't pop. It's just that the water inside got too heavy to float.

The rain hits the ground and collects in puddles, streams, rivers, and oceans again. The sun heats it. Vapor rises. Clouds form. Droplets merge. Rain falls. The loop starts over, and it's been running like this for billions of years — the same water, cycling endlessly between sky and earth.
