The Tireless Drummer

Put your hand on your chest. Feel that? Thump-thump. Thump-thump. That steady drum has been playing since before you were born, and it won't stop to take a single day off. So what is it actually doing in there?

Your heart is a muscle, about the size of your closed fist. But it's not a muscle for lifting things. It has one job, all day, every day: it's a pump. A squishy, tireless pump that pushes blood around your body.

Why push blood around? Because blood is your body's delivery service. Every tiny corner of you โ your toes, your brain, your big toe's smallest cell โ needs oxygen and food to keep working. Blood is the truck that drops it off.

Here's the clever part. The blood doesn't just go out โ it loops back. It drops off the fresh oxygen, picks up the used-up gas (carbon dioxide) like collecting the trash, and carries it back to be cleaned. Around and around, forever.

That's why the squeeze matters. When your heart muscle tightens โ thump! โ it shoves a fresh wave of blood out into your body. Then it relaxes and fills back up, like a sponge soaking up water before the next squeeze.

But who tells the heart when to thump? It has its own tiny built-in spark. A little cluster of cells fires a gentle electric pulse, and the whole heart squeezes in time with it. No thinking required โ it conducts itself, like a band that never needs a conductor.

And it speeds up and slows down to match you. Run up the stairs, and your muscles gulp more oxygen โ so your heart races to deliver it faster. Curl up to sleep, and it eases off into a slow, calm rhythm. It's always listening to what you need.

Add it up and the numbers are wild. Your heart beats roughly 100,000 times a day. That's about three billion beats in an average lifetime โ and it never once stops for a break. The hardest-working muscle you own, and you never have to ask.

So put your hand back on your chest. Thump-thump. That's your heart, feeding every corner of you, keeping the whole busy city of your body alive โ quietly, faithfully, while you go about your day not even noticing. Pretty good for a squishy little fist.
