An engine makes a car move by burning fuel and air inside cylinders. Each burn pushes a piston, and the pistons turn a crankshaft. That turning power travels through gears and other parts until the wheels rotate and the car rolls forward.
The surprising part is how carefully timed it all is. The fuel must enter, the spark must happen, and the burned gases must leave in the right order. Several cylinders usually take turns, so the pushes overlap and the ride feels steady instead of jumpy.
