The Pyramids of Giza are three enormous royal tombs near Cairo, built for ancient Egyptian kings. Their stone passages and chambers held a pharaoh's body and grave goods, because Egyptians believed death led into another life and the king needed help reaching the gods.
The largest pyramid, made for Khufu, took years of planning, quarrying, hauling, and careful stacking by organized crews. Its outer white stone once made it shine in the sun; today the rough blocks still let a child see human effort at mountain size.
