What ideas were behind the French Revolution?

The French Revolution grew from the idea that people have rights, and that rulers should answer to the people instead of ruling simply because they were born royal. Many French people wanted liberty, fairer laws, shared citizenship, and less privilege for nobles and church leaders.

Those ideas met real hardship: bread cost too much, taxes felt cruelly uneven, and ordinary families carried burdens others avoided. The Revolution wrote bold promises into public words, though it failed many people too, including women and enslaved people.
