The French Revolution grew from the idea that people, not kings, should be the source of government power. Many French people wanted laws that treated citizens more fairly, with freedom to speak and live, equal rights, and a shared duty to one another.
Those ideas met a hard daily problem: bread cost too much, while taxes fell most heavily on people with the least money. The Revolution did not include everyone equally, but its arguments changed how people imagined rights and citizenship.
