What is a solar storm?

A solar storm is a burst of energy and charged particles from the sun that can disturb Earth. It starts when tangled magnetic fields on the sun release suddenly, sending radiation and sometimes a huge cloud of solar material toward our planet.
Earth's magnetic field usually protects us, but a strong storm can shake that shield. Near the poles, charged particles meet air and make auroras glow. Bigger storms can also trouble satellites, radio, GPS, and electric systems, which is why scientists watch the sun closely.
