Petra is an ancient Nabataean city in Jordan where people cut homes, tombs, temples, and water channels into sandstone walls. Its hidden valley made it easier to defend, while trade routes and careful water storage helped a desert capital grow.
The astonishing part is how practical the beauty was. Builders shaped whole front walls from the cliff itself, working downward, then made streets, markets, a theater, and reservoirs so thousands of people could live where rain was rare.
