What is the difference between a crocodile and an alligator?

Crocodiles and alligators are close reptile cousins, but you can often tell them apart by the face. An alligator usually has a broad, rounded snout and hidden lower teeth; a crocodile has a slimmer, pointed snout and visible teeth when its mouth is shut.
They also prefer different homes. Crocodiles handle salty water better because of special glands, while alligators usually keep to fresh water. In southern Florida, though, both animals live in the same region, giving careful watchers a rare side-by-side comparison.
