A Wonderleaf question

What is the Milky Way?

What is the Milky Way?

a real page from the book

The Milky Way is the galaxy that holds our Sun, Earth, and hundreds of billions of other stars. It is a broad, rotating disk of stars, gas, and dust, pulled together by gravity. When your child sees a pale stripe across a dark sky, they are seeing part of our own galaxy from the inside.

Our solar system sits far from the busy center, in a spiral neighborhood called the Orion Arm. The Sun needs about 225 million years to circle the galaxy once, so one galactic year is older than mammals, flowers, and almost every dinosaur your child can name.
