What makes a rainbow?

A rainbow appears when sunlight passes through raindrops and separates into colors. Each drop bends and reflects the light, sending different colors out at slightly different angles. You see the bright arc when the sun is behind you and rain hangs in the sky ahead.
The lovely part is that your rainbow is personal. Someone standing nearby is catching color from other drops, even while looking at the same sky. Red reaches your eyes from a wider angle than violet, which is why the colors line up in order.
