Who lived in castles?

Castles housed nobles, their families, soldiers, workers, visitors, and, in danger, nearby villagers. A castle was both home and workplace: the lord governed from it, the lady managed the household, and guards, cooks, grooms, and craftspeople kept daily life moving.
The most revealing room was often the great hall, where meals, news, arguments, music, and business all crowded together. During a siege, even animals might be brought inside the walls, making the castle feel less like a palace and more like a packed town.
