Why are there so many different languages in the world?

There are so many languages because human groups spent long stretches living apart, and speech changes whenever people use it. A new sound, shortcut, or borrowed word can spread through one community but not another. After enough generations, related ways of speaking can become separate languages.

One delightful clue is that faraway languages can still carry old family marks. English, Spanish, Hindi, and Persian share ancient ancestry, even though they now sound very different. Words also travel between neighbors, so every language is part inheritance, part invention, and part meeting other people.
