Children look like their parents because they inherit DNA from both of them. DNA carries genes, the tiny instructions that help shape hair, eyes, height, dimples, and many other traits. Each child gets a fresh mix, so family resemblance comes with plenty of variation.
The delightful part is that some instructions can hide for a generation. A recessive gene can stay unseen in a parent, then appear in a child when both copies line up. That is why siblings can share a family look without matching.
