Why do we doodle when we are bored?

When we are bored, doodling gives the mind a small, steady task so it does not drift away completely. The pen movement, shapes, and tiny choices add enough stimulation to keep attention warm while the main thing, such as listening, still has room.

That is why a messy corner of loops or boxes can sometimes help a child hear more, not less. Simple drawing uses sight and movement without swallowing the listening parts of attention, and its repeated marks can feel calmly busy.
