Why do whales explode into giant feeding frenzies together?

Humpback whales burst up together because teamwork lets them catch far more fish than one hunter could. They gather when food is found, swim beneath the fish, and make a ring of bubbles that herds the school into a tight meal-sized crowd.
Then the whales rise at nearly the same moment, huge mouths open, taking in fish and seawater together. Their stretchy throats swell, and baleen strains the water back out while the fish remain. It is careful cooperation, even when the surface looks wildly messy.
