How do cell phones work?

Cell phones work by turning your voice, photo, or message into digital signals, then sending them on radio waves to a nearby tower. From there, computers and cables route the data to the right tower, and another phone changes the signal back into sound or pictures.
A phone call feels instant because radio waves travel enormously fast, but there is still a busy relay happening. Your pocket device is acting as microphone, tiny radio, map reader, switchboard helper, and speaker, all in the time it takes to say hello.
