Germs make us sick by getting into the body, multiplying, and damaging cells or irritating tissues. Your immune system notices and responds, which can bring fever, swelling, mucus, coughing, and aches. Many symptoms are signs of defense work, not just the germ itself.
A virus may turn a cell into a virus-making shop, while some bacteria release harmful chemicals or steal nutrients. Then immune cells rush in, clean up damaged bits, and remember the intruder when they can. That memory is why some illnesses are milder the next time.
