Germs make us sick when certain bacteria or viruses get inside the body and reproduce where they do not belong. Some injure cells directly, while others turn our own cells into virus factories. Many symptoms come from the immune system fighting back, not just from the germs.
A fever, a runny nose, and a sore throat are signs of a busy defense system. The body sends extra fluid, heat, and immune cells to the problem area. That messy mucus in a tissue is part of the cleanup after the battle.
