How does a dishwasher clean dishes?

A dishwasher cleans dishes by heating water, mixing in detergent, and spraying that soapy water hard through rotating arms. The hot water softens stuck food, detergent helps lift grease, and the dirty water drains away before clean rinse water comes in.
The spinning arms move because the water blasts out of angled holes, a bit like a garden sprinkler. Drying works best on materials that hold heat, which is why mugs may dry faster than plastic lids.
