What are the mysterious Nazca Lines?

The Nazca Lines are enormous ancient designs in Peru's desert, made by the Nazca people by clearing dark stones from lighter ground beneath. They were probably ceremonial walking paths and sky-facing offerings connected to water, seasons, and sacred beliefs.
A child may love that some animals are too large to recognize from the ground, yet their shapes are neat from high above. Makers could plan them with simple cords and pegs, then patiently move stones along the measured paths.
