What does it mean to retire?

To retire means a person has finished their regular job and now lives on money set aside during working years, plus benefits such as Social Security. It is usually a planned change, not a punishment, and it gives them more say over each day.
Retirement can look surprisingly busy: grandparents may garden, fix radios, help at a food bank, study a language, or take a small job because they miss the bustle. The big idea is that time becomes more self-directed, though not everyone has enough savings to choose easily.
