Matter is made of atoms, and atoms are made of even smaller parts. Protons and neutrons sit in the center, while electrons occupy the space around them. Protons and neutrons contain quarks, so ordinary stuff is built from pieces far too small to see.
The odd delight is how roomy atoms are. A table feels solid because electric forces keep its atoms from passing through your hand, not because every bit is packed full. So a spoon, a shoe, and your child are mostly space, arranged with astonishing neatness.
