What is trigonometry and how do sine and cosine work?

a real page from the book

Trigonometry is the part of math that measures right triangles by connecting angles with side lengths. Sine and cosine are ratios: sine compares the side across from an angle with the longest side, while cosine compares the side beside that angle with the longest side.

Draw every possible slant as a point moving around a circle, and those two ratios become coordinates. The sine value rises and falls like height on a wheel; cosine slides left and right, so one spinning line can describe waves, shadows, ramps, and sound.

Try it out

Use two fingers and the table edge to make right triangles, then notice how the slant changes as the opening grows.
