The food we eat comes from plants, animals, fungi, farms, gardens, rivers, and seas, but most of its energy begins with plants using sunlight. Leaves make sugar from light, air, and water, and that food energy moves through everything that eats plants.
A bowl of rice, a glass of milk, and a fish finger all carry a trail. Rice grew in a field; milk came from a cow that ate plants; fish often depend on tiny sun-fed plankton drifting near the ocean surface.
