Where does the water go when we flush?

When we flush, the water travels through house pipes into sewer pipes, then usually to a wastewater treatment plant. There, screens, tanks, helpful bacteria, and disinfecting steps clean it before it goes back to a river, lake, or sea.
The bend under the toilet is clever: it keeps a little water sitting in the pipe, which blocks sewer smells from coming into the room. Farther along, treatment tanks let heavy bits settle while microbes digest waste too small to scoop out.
