Why did dinosaurs go extinct?

Most dinosaurs died out because a huge asteroid hit Earth about 66 million years ago. The crash threw dust and soot high into the atmosphere, making the planet colder and darker. Plants failed, plant-eaters starved, and meat-eaters soon followed as the food chain broke.
The impact site is now linked with Chicxulub in Mexico, where a vast crater marks the collision. Not every dinosaur line disappeared, though. Small feathered survivors lived on, and today’s birds are their living relatives.
