Why do countries have borders?

Countries have borders because people need to know which government makes the rules in a place. A border says where laws, money, voting, taxes, and public services change. The ground may look continuous, but the responsibilities on each side are different.
Some borders follow rivers, coasts, or mountains, while others were drawn as straight lines by powerful people far from the land. Borders can move after agreements, wars, or new countries forming, so a map is also a snapshot of human history.
