Why do some animals have camouflage?

Animals have camouflage because being hard to notice can keep them alive or help them hunt. Prey may avoid hungry eyes by matching leaves, bark, sand, or shadow. Predators use the same idea to get closer before the animal they are stalking has time to flee.
The most fun detail is that camouflage is not always stillness or dull color. A cuttlefish can alter its skin in a flash, and some harmless creatures borrow the look of dangerous ones. Over many generations, the better-hidden animals tended to leave more young.
