How do animals survive winter?

Animals survive winter by leaving, insulating, storing energy, slowing their bodies, or hiding where cold hurts less. Some migrate to warmer places. Others grow thicker coats, eat heavily before food gets scarce, or enter hibernation to spend far less energy.
The strangest survivors are the ones that almost seem paused. Wood frogs can partly freeze, with sugar helping protect their cells, then thaw when spring returns. Beavers stay near food stored underwater, while deer gather in sheltered places to share warmth.
