Refrigerators keep food from spoiling by making life difficult for bacteria and mold. Cold temperatures do not kill every germ, but they slow growth and feeding. With microbes working slowly, milk, fruit, leftovers, and cheese stay usable much longer than they would on a warm counter.
A fridge cools by carrying heat out of the box. Refrigerant flows through coils, picks up warmth from inside, then releases that warmth outside after a compressor squeezes it. That is why the back or bottom of a working refrigerator can feel warm.
