How are books made?

Books are made by shaping an author's draft into finished pages, printing those pages with ink on large sheets, folding them in the right pattern, and attaching them to a cover. Editors, artists, designers, printers, and binders each handle a different step.
One pleasing trick is that a big printed sheet may look completely out of order at first. Page numbers sit in strange places because the sheet still needs to be folded. After the folds, trims, glue, and cover are added, the pages finally read straight through.
