How does a vacuum cleaner pick up dirt?

A vacuum cleaner picks up dirt by moving air very quickly. A motor turns a fan, the fan lowers the air pressure near the nozzle, and room air rushes in. Dust, crumbs, and hair get swept along with that moving air.
The dirt does not simply disappear. It lands in a bag or plastic cup while the air passes through a filter and leaves the machine. A brush roll helps too, combing carpet fibers so hidden grit can be pulled free.
