How is dirty water cleaned for us to use?

How is dirty water cleaned for us to use?

a real page from the book

Dirty water is cleaned by moving it through steps that remove waste bit by bit. Screens catch large objects, tanks let grit sink, bacteria eat dissolved muck, filters trap fine specks, and disinfection kills germs before the water returns to rivers or pipes.

One lovely truth is that some of the hardest workers are too small to see. In the treatment tanks, bacteria feed on leftovers from soap, food, and sewage, turning invisible mess into clumps that can settle out. Clean water is teamwork, gravity, air, and time.
