A black hole is a place where matter has been packed so tightly that gravity traps everything that gets too close, even light. Many are born after huge stars run out of fuel and collapse, leaving an object we cannot see directly.
The fun detail is that scientists find black holes by watching the neighborhood around them. Dust and gas can whirl, heat, and shine fiercely nearby, while stars may swing around an unseen heavy center like dancers around an invisible partner.
