What is Mont-Saint-Michel?

Mont-Saint-Michel is a rocky tidal island in Normandy, France, with a village wrapped around its slopes and a great abbey at the top. It began as a holy site and later served as a fortress, so one small island holds church, town, and castle stories together.
The bay is the part children often remember: the sea can pull far away, then return quickly across the flats. Long ago, monks prayed above the lanes while soldiers guarded the walls below, and today visitors still climb narrow streets toward the abbey roof.
