What is the longest river in the world?

Most reference books still name Africa’s Nile as Earth’s longest river, running about 4,132 miles to the Mediterranean Sea. Some scientists argue the Amazon is a little longer if you count its farthest mountain stream as the start, so the answer depends on the measuring rule.
That is the part kids often love: rivers are not tidy lines on a map. They grow from springs, rain, snowmelt, and side streams. The Amazon may lose the length contest in many books, but it carries more water than any other river.
