Mercury is a small rocky planet very near the Sun, with almost no air and a surface scarred by ancient impacts. Its sunny side can become fiercely hot, but its dark side loses heat quickly, so the same world can be burning and bitterly cold.
One of Mercury’s strangest details is its timing. It circles the Sun in only 88 Earth days, yet turns so slowly that daylight creeps along for ages. Inside, it holds an unusually large iron center, making this tiny planet surprisingly heavy for its size.
