A Wonderleaf question

Who invented pizza?

Who invented pizza?

a real page from the book

Pizza does not have one inventor. It grew from many people's meals over centuries: flat breads baked around the Mediterranean, toppings added for flavor and fullness, and, much later, tomato-topped dough sold in Naples to workers who needed food they could carry and afford.

The tomato part arrived late: tomatoes came to Europe from the Americas in the 1500s, and some Europeans treated them warily before eating them. The famous Margherita pizza story, with basil, mozzarella, and tomato matching Italy's colors, may be partly legend, but it helped pizza's fame spread.
