Why did the dinosaurs go extinct?

Most non-bird dinosaurs died out after a huge asteroid hit Earth about 66 million years ago. The strike blasted dust and debris into the air, dimming daylight for a long time. Plants suffered first, then plant-eaters, then the hunters that depended on them.
The tender twist is that dinosaurs did not vanish completely. Some small feathered dinosaurs survived the hungry, dark years, and their family line became birds. So a robin on a fence is not just near dinosaur history; it is part of that history.
