Why do birds build nests?

Birds build nests mainly to keep eggs safe and warm. A nest cushions fragile shells, stops them from rolling off, and holds body heat close while the chicks grow inside. It also gives new hatchlings one protected place to wait for food.
Nests can look wildly different because birds solve different problems. A hummingbird may stitch a tiny cup with spider silk, while an eagle can add sticks for years until the nest becomes heavier than a grown person.
