Why do birds build nests?

Birds build nests mainly to keep eggs safe, warm, and still. The nest cushions the shells, helps warmth gather around them, and puts the eggs in a place that may be harder for hungry animals to notice or reach.
The fun part is how personal the building gets. Some birds stitch with spider silk, some stack heavy branches for years, and some use no nest at all, keeping an egg on their feet because bare ice offers almost nothing to gather.
