Why do butterflies start as caterpillars?

Butterflies begin as caterpillars because childhood and adulthood need different bodies. A caterpillar is built to eat leaves and grow quickly; an adult butterfly is built to fly, sip nectar, and make eggs. Two life stages let one animal do both jobs well.
The best detail is what happens in the chrysalis: many old caterpillar parts break down, while imaginal discs start making wings, legs, and a drinking tube. The butterfly that crawls out carries the same life story, with an entirely new tool kit.
