Why do cats purr?

Cats purr because small muscles around the voice box make the air vibrate as they breathe. A happy cat may purr to show comfort, but purring can also happen when a cat is stressed, hurt, or giving birth, because the vibration seems to calm the cat's body.
The sound is not only for people. Newborn kittens cannot see or hear at first, but they can feel their mother's rumble and use it to find milk and warmth. Some purr frequencies sit in the range scientists study for helping bones and soft tissue repair.
