Why do owls hoot at night?

Owls hoot at night because many owls are nocturnal: they are active after dark, when other owls are awake to hear them. A hoot can mark a territory, call to a mate, or help a pair keep track of each other across the trees.
Night air often helps the message carry. With fewer daytime sounds and calmer, cooler air, one owl's call can travel a long way. To a child in bed, it may sound spooky; to the owl, it is ordinary conversation.
