How was the Great Wall of China built?

The Great Wall of China was built by many workers over many centuries, using local earth, brick, stone, ramps, ropes, and simple lifting tools. Different rulers joined and rebuilt sections, so the wall grew piece by piece across mountains, deserts, and plains.
Its builders used whatever the landscape offered. In some places they packed earth hard; in others they made bricks nearby or carried stone along ridges. Watchtowers turned the wall into a warning system, with smoke and fire signals moving news from tower to tower.
